He just missed his girlfriend ...
Will (not his real name) had a girlfriend his junior year in high school. Over the summer, she moved with her parents from North Carolina to Florida to finish high school. Will and his girlfriend still kept in touch over Facebook, and texted each other 20 times a day and talked every night. Will was joking around one night, missing her, didn't have a lot else to do, and as a joke, sent his girlfriend in Florida a somewhat sexually explicit photograph. The girl's father happened to see her cell phone and the photo of Will, and became angrier than even his daughter would have expected. He called the police and pressed charges. Will, by then a senior in high school, was arrested on child pornography. She was only 17, and since Will was 18, he was charged as an adult. Because he had sent the text and photo across state lines, he had committed a felony. He was expelled from school and not allowed to graduate pending trial. He lost a baseball scholarship. He lost the girlfriend. After spending several hundred thousand dollars in legal fees, he avoided prison and having his name put on the sex offender's list -- but for four terrifying, gut-wrenching months, Will did not know whether his life would be ruined forever. He'll be embarrassed for the rest of his life. True story.
