21st-Century Teaching
Spreadsheets — Programs designed to organize and manipulate numerical data. Benefits in the classroom include saving time, organizing displays of information, and increasing motivation to work with mathematics
Databases — Programs that allow users to store, organize, and manipulate information, including both text and numerical data. Benefits include reducing data redundancy (the number of places data must be stored), saving time locating and/or updating important information, allowing comparisons of information through searches across files, and revealing relationships among data.

Comparing Archetypes in Myth, Folktale and Fable with Shakespeare's Plays
Students will research archetypes found in the hero’s journey and each student will list a different archetype on a Google spreadsheet open to the class.
First, sites to visit about archetypes:

Next, each student will find a unique folk tale, fable or myth via web search, will print the story and underline the possible archetypes. Each student will complete a row on the spreadsheet using her story. Once the spreadsheet is complete, students will begin to see how archetypes pervade literature in every culture around the world.
Students then will pick three archetypes each and, with a partner, will create an original, modern-day story using these six different archetypes. Students will trade original stories and give an archetypal interpretation of the peer story.
Next, students will be ready to study a work of Shakespeare through the lens of archetypal critical theory (Common core standards have students reading a play of Shakespeare each year of high school).
Below is a sample spreadsheet listing possible archetypes found in the fairytale Cinderella.
